Istilah
port number bagi pengguna Internet tentu bukan hal yang asing lagi
karena begitu sering dipakai pada saat mengakses layanan yang ada di
Internet. Misalnya port 194 dipakai untuk protokol IRC, port 1080 untuk
SOCKS (proxy IRC), port 21 untuk FTP, port 80 atau 8080 untuk HTTP
(WWW), port 25 untuk SMTP (E-mail), port 22 untuk SSH (Secure Shell),
110 untuk pop server dan port 23 untuk Telnet.
Internet
Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) yang merupakan sub dari Internet
Architecture Board (IAB)—sebuah badan koordinasi dan penasihat teknis
bagi masyarakat pengguna Internet, membagi port number ke dalam tiga
jarak (range).
3.1 Well Known Port Numbers yang pada awalnya berkisar antara 0 hingga 255 tapi kemudian diperlebar
untuk mendukung antara 0 hingga 1023. Port number yang termasuk ke dalam
well-known port, selalu merepresentasikan layanan jaringan yang sama,
dan ditetapkan oleh Internet Assigned Number Authority (IANA).
Beberapa di antara port-port yang berada di dalam range Well-known port
masih belum ditetapkan dan direservasikan untuk digunakan oleh layanan
yang bakal ada pada masa depan. Well-known port didefinisikan dalam RFC 1060.
